“Ragtime is Syncopation goin’ mad”

Workshop for advanced music classes at general education schools or music schools

The ragtime style was the first popular music style of the 20th century and significantly influenced the subsequent popular music culture of America and Europe.

Practical handling of the elements of ragtime is at the forefront of the workshop. Thus, instrumental skills of all students are necessary. A basic knowledge of chord theory is also required. The students of the workshop will briefly be introduced into both the history as well as the musical elements of ragtime and learn, for example, about the relationship between ragtime and hip hop.

The aim of the workshop is for all participants to be able to independently design a simple, chordal ragtime molding (strain). At the end of the workshop, the respective results will musically be presented by the participants in one (or more) ensembles. Finally, all participants will receive a reader with the contents of the workshop as well as sheet music, literature and CD recommendations.

Note: Ideally, the two (optionally three) workshop days should contain sufficient time buffer at general education schools so that the tasks from the first (and optionally also the second) practical phase can be practiced safely (this can probably be omitted for students of a music school).

Scott Joplin’s “School of Ragtime”

Workshop for advanced music classes at universities, conservatories and music schools

A lecture or workshop based on Scott Joplin’s “School of Ragtime”. The etudes penned by the “King of Ragtime” reveal more about his variety of ragtime and on ragtime in general than it might seem at first glance. In practice, it can also be used to derive concrete and very useful advice on how to rehearse a ragtime piece.
